Centro Armonia Preschool in South San Jose  was founded in 2004 by Claudia Hernandez. We are Santa Clara Valley’s premier Spanish immersion preschool and kindergarten serving children ages 2.5 years to entering 1st grade.

In May of 2016 we opened our second location in San Jose right next to the beautiful Santa Teresa foothills. This new location will serve children newborn to entering 1st grade.

Centro Armonia uses a thematic unit approach as its educational framework. The developmentally appropriate units that we create lend themselves to creativity and activities that the children can relate to and where they can be introduced to new skills, as well as the Spanish language. These units provide a context to learn within where we can address academic skills, social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language development.

We chose a thematic approach because it is

  • Developmentally appropriate
  • Child centered and teacher led
  • Structured to create opportunities for social, emotional and cognitive engagement and competency
  • Comprised of large and small group activities as well as individual engagement.

Our routines create context for our students’ day. Even if we can’t understand what is being said, we can be confident in our environment by following a set routine. The order is static, the duration is fluid.

  • Gathering activity–Math manipulatives, sensory play and fine motor skills
  • Circle time–Introduction and practice of core concepts, language, music and movement
  • Activity–Art, exploration, or science
  • Snack–a hearty meal from home
  • Outside play–Social engagement, free choice and exercise
  • Activity–Read aloud, indoor independent play
  • Closing circle and goodbye

We invite families to come and experience our day through scheduled class time visits.

Centro Armonia is the Silicon Valley’s only 100% Spanish immersion and preschool. We believe the best method for learning a foreign language is to be fully immersed. Our educational philosophy creates an environment that engages children in conversation with our staff of native Spanish speaking teachers.

Because the human brain is neurologically tuned to language acquisition between the ages of 18 months to 6 years, our program taps into this potential by:

  • Providing a 100% immersion environment
  • Creating context through activities, music, movement and daily routines
  • Mastery through repetition and practice
  • Creating a safe and nurturing environment to acquire and practice new language skills.

By viewing behavior as simply behavior, without labeling it as “good” or “bad” and understanding that behavior is a call from a child to meet a need, we create a mutually respectful, understanding environment that makes connections more important than the behavior that we want to see. In order for us to discipline ‘positively’, we ask ourselves the following:

  • Is it kind and firm at the same time? (Respectful and encouraging)
  • Does it help children feel a sense of belonging and significance? (Connection)
  • Is it effective long-term? (Punishment works short term, but has negative long-term results.)
  • Does it teach valuable social and life skills for good character? (Respect, concern for others, problem-solving, accountability, contribution, cooperation)
  • Does it invite children to discover how capable they are and to use their personal power in constructive ways?

"The staff at Centro Armonia has been very willing to work with my son from the first day of being left without mommy through to now where he is in k / pre-k."

Our educational staff is made exclusively of native Spanish speaking , qualified preschool teachers and aides. Beyond their qualifications, our teachers have an instinctive, natural rapport with children and are career educators. Our classes enjoy a low ratio (ratio varies with the ages of the children) with ample staff to manage the varied needs of our students.

The Centro Armonia administrative staff is caring and professional, always ready to help families in their day to day needs at the school.
